Europe Trip Day 9: Salzburg to Innsbruck | Innsbruck Old Town | Triumphpforte | Golden Roof

We reach Salzbury train station at 6:30am and our train started moving at around 6:58am. We saw the beautiful sunrise against snow alps while in the train.

We reached Innsbruck at around 8:46am. It was love at first sight with Innsbruck. Innsbruck’s Old Town is a charming blend of medieval and modern, where centuries-old architecture meets lively cafes and boutique shops. Its narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with pastel-colored buildings, and iconic sights like the Golden Roof and the imposing St. Jacob’s Cathedral draw visitors into the city’s rich history. With the majestic Alps serving as a backdrop, the Old Town exudes a unique ambiance, offering both a step back in time and a vibrant hub for exploration. Whether you’re wandering through arcaded walkways or sipping coffee at a cozy cafe, Innsbruck’s Old Town captures the heart of Austria’s alpine beauty.

I am glad to make the decision to travel really light as we walk around the town. We could not check into our airbnb as we are too early. We can only check in from 3pm onwards.

Our Airbnb was right beside Triumphpforte. The Triumphpforte, or Triumph Arch, is one of Innsbruck’s most recognizable landmarks, blending historical significance with architectural grandeur. Erected in 1765 to commemorate the marriage of Archduke Leopold II and Maria Ludovica, the arch now stands as a symbol of both celebration and remembrance, with one side dedicated to Leopold’s wedding and the other to honor the passing of his father, Emperor Francis I. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Austrian Alps, this majestic archway is a must-see for visitors to Innsbruck, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich history as well as stunning photo opportunities.

We have our dinner at Vapiano Innsbruck Leopoldstrasse beside the Triumphpforte, and the portion was huge.

After dinner, we went to check out the Christmas Market. The Christmas market at Innsbruck's Golden Roof is a magical experience, where history and holiday cheer come together in the heart of the city. Nestled beneath the iconic Golden Roof, the market brims with festive stalls offering everything from handmade crafts to seasonal delicacies. As the air fills with the aroma of spiced mulled wine and roasted almonds, visitors can browse for unique gifts while taking in the stunning medieval architecture that surrounds them.

In the evenings, the market becomes even more enchanting with twinkling lights and traditional holiday music setting the scene. The Golden Roof, glittering under festive lights, provides a stunning backdrop to the lively atmosphere. This cozy yet vibrant market embodies the spirit of an Austrian Christmas, offering a warm, welcoming escape into a world of seasonal joy and timeless charm.
