Today marks our 8th day in Europe. We were in Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg is a city where history, culture, and natural beauty converge. Known as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, this charming city effortlessly combines its rich musical heritage with stunning architecture and breathtaking landscapes.
We visited the doctor first thing in the morning. Unlike in Singapore, we didn’t have to wait long to see the doctor. However, purchasing medication follows a unique system that differs from many other countries. Unlike in places like Singapore, over-the-counter medications—such as pain relievers, cold remedies, or even basic items like Panadol—are not available in supermarkets or convenience stores. Instead, medications, whether prescription or OTC, are only sold through licensed pharmacies, known locally as “Apotheken.”. The cost of the medicine can be quite steep.
After our doctor visit, we found a cozy café serving hot soup. Warm soup had become our go-to comfort food since arriving in Austria’s cold winter. We stopped at Leichtsinn, a “feel-good food” spot, and enjoyed one of our best meals yet. The service was excellent, and we immediately felt better after eating.
We took a stroll around Salzburg Old Town after our meals. Salzburg’s Old Town (Altstadt) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walking through its cobbled streets feels like stepping back in time. Baroque towers, intricate wrought-iron shop signs, and pastel-colored facades line the narrow lanes, creating a storybook atmosphere.
For many, Salzburg is synonymous with "The Sound of Music," and fans of the classic film flock to locations like Mirabell Gardens, where Maria and the Von Trapp children sang "Do-Re-Mi." The city also boasts the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress, which sits atop Festungsberg hill and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Salzach River. The fortress, one of Europe’s largest medieval castles, is a testament to the city’s rich history and enduring spirit.
As evening approached, the temperature began to drop further, and we started to feel the chill setting in. Feeling unwell, we decided to cut our day short and head back to our Airbnb earlier than planned. With an early train ride scheduled for the next morning, we prioritized rest over exploration. This is why we ended up capturing fewer moments on camera during our time in Salzburg.
