Europe Trip Day 7: Vienna to Hallstatt to Salzburg

We took the OBB train from Vienna to Hallstatt. The cost of the train tickets per person is €21.70 (SGD$30.55) including taxes, which I have purchase the tickets online a few months before this trip. The train departed at 5:55am, and arrived at 8pm in Attnang-Puchheim where we got 8 minutes to transfer to another train. If our first train delay by 10 mins, we will have to buy another tickets. This is the risk that we are taking. Do try to avoid doing short transfer on your future trips. If you miss the train, it will end up costing you more.

We arrived at 9:24am at Hallstatt Bahnhof and we had to take a short walk to take a ferry to cross over to the tourist side of Hallstatt. The ferry costs €3,50 (SGD$4.93) per person for a one-way trip, with no online purchase option. Tickets must be bought on the spot right before boarding.

It was raining, and although KJ was feeling better, he has not fully recovered. Most shops were not open when we reach there. We found a small restaurant with sheltered outdoor sitting area and we ordered something to eat there waiting for the rain to stop. We have a beautiful lake to stare at while enjoying our hot soup.

Hallstatt is like a fairy tale village in the Austrian Alps renowned for its breathtaking beauty and rich history. Everywhere is so beautiful and dreamy. Located in the Salzkammergut region, Hallstatt is famous for its idyllic setting by the Hallstätter See, a pristine alpine lake surrounded by towering mountains. The village is adorned with charming traditional Austrian architecture, adorned with colorful flowers, and narrow cobblestone streets that lead to quaint cafes, shops, and picturesque houses.

Hallstatt is also known for its fascinating archaeological sites and ancient salt mines, which have provided insights into the region's prehistoric past. We visited the shop where the tickets are sold but we did not went up to the salt mines. The tickets were too expensive for us.

Hallstatt Ice Cave were closed from late-October until May.

I recommended to take buses back to Salzburg which will save you 1 hour compare to a train ride. Furthermore, the bus ride was very scenery that I dedicated a whole video just on the view from the buses. Try to leave Hallstatt early so that you can choose to be seated on the right side of the bus.

Take Bus 543 from Hallstatt to Gosaumuhle bus stop. You only have 5 minutes to transfer but both buses are park side by side. From Gosaumuhle bus stop, Take Bus 542 to Bad Ischi. Walk from Stall C to Stall E. around 20 min ride. However, from our experience, we did not transfer to any buses. The bus just swop it number from 543 to 542. So we actually took just 1 bus from Hallstatt to Bad Ischi.

Bad Ischi looks like a pretty place to walk around if you have the time. I wanted to sit down to eat or drink something in Bad Ischi but KJ was not feeling too good at this time. So we just go ahead and board the bus 150 from the bus stop.

From Bad Ischi take Bus 150: 1 hour direct bus to Salzburg main bus depot Sudtiroler Platz. We paid cash direct to the bus driver.

Upon reaching Salzburg, we went into the supermarket to get some food. We brought some instant noodle with the intention to get some boiling water since we were staying in a Airbnb this time. The supermarket had only 1 type of instant noodle with limited flavors. However, we did enjoy the instant noodle very much as it was the only hot food we can find at that time.

We did not go out after we reach our Airbnb as we were super tired.

For our 2022 Europe trip, we spent an incredible 12 days exploring the beautiful countries of Germany, the Czech Republic, and Austria. Here’s a day-by-day rundown of how we organized our adventure across these three captivating destinations.
